Unknown Conch

I was sold to me as a conch. It does have the snout and the little beady eyes too :) I will have to see if I can get better pics tomorrow.

He could not tell me if it was reef safe so I thought I would check. It look similar to the strombus sp in my book but I also read that the mangrove conch(Melongena corona) is often mistaken for a strombus sp. and is a snail predator...

Can't be to safe ...
 
Definitely not from the Conidae, IMO. General shape of aperture, siphonal canal as well as overall shape doesn't really match the distinct look of a cone snail, at least in my experience- pattern is sort of lacking, too. Have any pics of the foot?:) or maybe the snail out and about? I wish I knew more about gastropods, but I really can't ID him outright. Wish I had my shell book with me.
 
I think the foot would be a decent guage. My queen has a very sharp foot and can "jump" a decent distance.
