Using reef substrate in african tank cichlids

After 25 yrs in reefs I have decided to convert to african cichlid tank I am pretty sure I could use old reef substrate for alkaline boost in tank as well as hardness rather than spend for rift substrate opinions?

i wouldnt use substrate that has been in a sw setup, but thats just me. crushed coral will work, but i prefer sand because mine like to dig around and crushed coral just doesnt look all that good for that

Its not crushed coral its reef oolitic sand
