Uv lights and algae

Having a powerful uv light can that get rid of all the algae? And can I leave my light on longer with the uv light because I really don't want to get algae??? My last tank had algae like crazy... And my fish tank seals crumbled up and pull right off.. Does this have anything to do with the algae.. I had the tank brand new I'n 1998 so I was wondering if it was just getting old and falling apart thanks sorry my thread is so long happy new year everyone!!!!!
