What do you guys think if life reef sumps and protein skimmers?

Buying a sump was the biggest rookie mistake I ever made. You can DIY one for much less money, and it doesn't even have to be made out of another aquarium or glass. Anything made from drinkable quality plastic will do. Next time I do one it will be out of the horse troughs from Tractor Supply or wherever.
I don't know anything about their protein skimmers as I've never heard of them. I doubt that is a good thing. I'd want to use an Eshopps or reef octopus as they are normally good quality skimmers. Better quality of skimmer the better it will work and better results you'll have.
