If its coming from the corals it's chemical war fare. They are fighting to take over space if they are too close to a non compatible coral.
 
Thank you. I'm still a little confused as we've only seen this one other time and we only have 1 xenia frag, 1 zoanthid frag, and recently purchased 1 ricordea. Are these all compatible?

Some coral release toxins into the water in a predatory sense to ensure they are able to flourish and reproduce without competing for space. Are your corals close to each other?

Xenia won't sting anything

Zoas release toxins in the water and can have affects on Xenia. You may want to keep them apart.

Ricordeas are semi aggressive in a reef tank. They also release chemicals into the water. Leave a couple inches all around in between other corals.
