Why do you say beaten up?! I took him in from a family member who had him in a tank too small for him :/ he has really nice colors

I just did a quick search on this fish and I now see what you mean when you say beaten up. I feel bad for this guy but he's definitely in a better tank

yes, the fish is missing a lot of it's fins and tail. Sadly, it can come from poor keeping as much as from fighting with other fish. Good food, water quality and a large tank might help those fins grow back if the damage is not permanent.
