i got two extremely dirty and established filter pads from an aquarium. rinsed them in water i took out of my aquarium and put them inside of pantyhose and put it inside my tank.

i used pantyhose because i dont want the brown sludge to go all around my tank.

will this work in seeding? how long should it take?

i have 2 of these floating in my 30 gallon

If you had the filter running through the pads, it would cycle faster, but I'm guessing maybe 1-2 weeks. I don't remember.. but it was either .5ppm ammonia or 3ppm ammonia that was the optimum level for cycling.

well i assume the left over sludge on the filters will provide the ammonia. just tested and it seems to be going up

not enough to finish cycling it might keep it alive for a little while but it takes time to break down. no food for the bacteria = they die off.

yea, definitely add some ammonia. pure ammonia would be best, but in a pinch you can add fish food (just gets really messy)
