He may not know, you know how those chain stores are.

Yes I know ( insert sarcasm) I worked at Petsmart til recently. They have tags with a picture AND name of the fish !! Better labeling than many LFSs.

It would be great if the OP took some pics even if they are phone pics. :)

Just remember before you get too mean to the OP. We all started somewhere. This person is enthusiastic and it's hard for newbies to stare at an almost empty tank.

I'm not happy about the Angels either, but they returned most of the other fish and that was hard. It's rough getting new folks to listen and be PATIENT. Plus they will read conflicting advice !!

Be kind :)

My vote:
RETURN Angels
FIND what kind of Algae Eater u have
DON'T buy any more fish for now
BUY some plants*
POST your test results
READ about fish
ENJOY your Betta for now :)

Off my soapbox

*or get them free off here or The Planted Tank forum (easy plants are often dirt cheap or RAOKs) If you buy plants at the store try to get the Hornwort or Anacharis that Severum Mama recommended. Just let them float on top.

Chain stores often sell Semi Aquatic plants that will die underwater. Petsmart is starting to label the Semi Aquatics.

The right plants will help your cycle go faster and smoother.

So I can't manage a one line post, so what LOL

This information is spread out over at least 3 threads, and I think we're all getting confused and are on different pages. I'll try to sum it up, and the OP can correct me if I'm missing anything.

- Got 2 Goldfish from a carnival and had them in a bowl

- Bought a 10 gallon tank and bought 7 more Goldfish and 2 Dojo Loaches (where are these fish now?)

- Purchased a 20 gallon tank and 14 fish at the same time. 2 Giant Danios, 1 Knife fish, 1 Kissing Gourami, 2 Silver Dollars, 1 Silvertip, 1 "algae eater", 1 Betta, 1 Disosaur Birchir, 2 Bala Sharks, 2 Tiger Barbs

- Fish started dying

- Joined the site and got advice from several members. I think the OP had trouble understanding cycling until recently.

- Returned all of the fish except the Betta and "Algae Eater"

- Since the Betta and algae eater "hadn't died"...OP went out and purchased 2 Angels

- Realized Angels are not compatible

- Purchased test kit (what are your levels? Through all these threads and posts I still haven't seen them listed)

Obviously there was lots of good advice given by AA members across these threads...I didn't feel like reading through all of that and including it.

I just want to get all of us on the same page, are we missing anything? Also, please post your ammonia, nitrIte and nitrAte levels currently in the tank.

Just so u know
I know the Ammonia is getting lower, but now you'll start seeing Nitrites, then Nitrates spiking. Only when Ammonia is ZERO and the others are ZERO or safe will it be safe and kind to add new fish.

Oh I found a visual aid :)

I didn't mean the labels I meant that fact that they have soo much to look at and by the time you say I want this and this and this you wander off and look at other things, that's my problem. I like my ma and pa store cause they talk to me about what I'm buying and write the name on the bag lmao

Thank you for sticking up for me but my pet store is a good drive away so I do t go there often and the label said 20+ for the angels and I did some research before buying then and what I got was that two could live I my tank but no more than two and I bout some plant bulbs that are supposed to root but so far none of them have rooted and I have had them for bout a month now. I wasn't planning on buying anymore fish but like I have said before I got to thinking and I didn't want to put the betta in a little betta bowl while I waited for my tank to cycle and since I didn't have any fish die for quite a few days I figured fish could live in it while I did the fish in cycle and I didn't want the betta to think the whole tank was his territory so when I put other fish in there he would get mad and my research said I could have two angels live in my tank I figured I would just put them in there and get my tank cycled then once it got cycled maybe buy some more but that will be a whole from now before I buy anymore

And so far I tested my water today and yesterday and the color of the water isn't the color of the .50 reading or the .25 reading but it's close to both

Mahoney, I apologize for any previous comments that upset you and please don't think that's how the members are on here. Alot of us are die hard hobbyists that truly care about the fish we keep. You are doing a great job of getting on the right track and don't worry about the mistakes thusfar, we all have done it. As long as you keep a steady schedule of testing and pwc's if needed, you will be perfectly ok. Also, if the angels are 2 small ones, there's nothing wrong with keeping 2 in a 20 g tank, they really aren't uber-active swimmers and don't get huge.. you're doing good

He sold the Goldfish and 10g to his brother. I advised he get all the Goldfish returned and start that tank over. Before all those poor fish die.

Ammonia was .50-.25 if I remember right.
No readings on 'trates or 'trites just PH

Good news, he bought the kit.

That's why I listed it on the timeline. I just personally hadn't ever seen the levels posted. I know there's been lots of pwc's recently...levels currently look reasonable...obviously the way fish were dropping left and right shows they weren't before.

This is the only picture I could get of the algae eater its not a good one

I'm a die hard hobbyist but I'm just a new one. The angels are small ones and I wasn't planning on getting more than two

I don't think he has tested the water

I hope you people realize I'm trying my hardest to do what's best And do what you say needs to be done I did my research and was trying to make it better for the betta so if you want to continue to ridicule me for trying then I don't want to hear it
I just wanted help not to hear how big of am idiot I am. This is the first tank I have had any problems with so came here for help not continually get told how many times I messed up and how I'm such an idiot for trying. I hope no beginners come to this website for help cause all you people do is be mean to them when it's not our fault we don't know everything that has to deal with a fish tank I'm sure every single one of you had had problems and made some silly mistakes with your tanks when you first started out so remember that before you start going off on someone
people are being mean because you didnt listen to advice and are harming the fish.

The problem is that Angels are VERY sensitive as babies. Not a good fish to cycle with. And as far as worrying about your Betta being territorial ? Don't. I've had Bettas for over 20yrs. They are typically peaceful, except to other Bettas and sometimes Gouramis (cousins ).

There are aggressive Bettas, but I've seen mean Guppies LOL. Save your Angels, take them back before they die please.
It's not a good reason to add new fish yet.

20+ means minimum tank size. It's not realistic for Angels. They get big with tall fins. I always told people 40+ should be minimum for 2. And 50g is better cuz it's taller.

Check out YouTube Videos of adult Angels in planted tanks.

I know you are trying. It's not fun to be insulted.

I thought Corsair just said he posted them at .25-.50. Regardless, I'd still like to hear what they are currently directly from the OP. If the ammonia was previously high enough to be killing off all the other fish...it's possible the residual ammonia (even after the pwc's) is still through the roof.

This is the kit I got the didn't have the big kit that everyone was talking bout they only had that one and a ph test kit. And yes the levels are correct.

And an update on the goldfish tank my brother bought a fish that gave all the fish ich and all but two goldfish and one loach died before we could get the medication they needed. We did a water change everyday but that wasn't enough
