I did a little maintenance on the tank today. Cleaned the skimmer and replaced the filter media in the reactor. Of course that caused the skimmer to go nuts and I had to turn it off for a while.

All seems to be settled down and looking good again.

The new corals are looking great. Polyps are out and the color looks awesome. I'm looking forward to seeing how quickly they start to grow.

I plan on cranking the lights up a little more next weekend. Still running 80% B and 70% W.

What lights are you using Ziggy? I just simply don't recall. How some have their LEDs cranked up so high just blows my mind. I'm in the process of solving an issue of dulled out coral color in my tank. After almost 2 years of thinking it was phosphates it turns out it was my Radions being too high...After much consulting with Ecotech they are down at 60% and my colors have improved in a months time. LEDs sure do the trick, but they sure aren't that simple.

I custom built my LED lighting. I have 42 3w Cree LEDs. The whites are Cool White 6700K and the Blues are Royal Blue 420nm.

My RKE manages the LEDs.

My previous build with these lights the Blues were at 100% and the Whites were at 90%. I had excellent growth with this combination. I'm bringing them up slowly.

Interesting on the customs. Keep hearing good things about them.

I documented the build of the lights in the previous iteration of this tank. The link to that thread is in my signature if you are interested.

I have had excellent results with the lighting on this tank. If I were doing a larger system I'm not sure I would build the lights myself although my results have been good. Maybe with higher watt LEDs I could achieve the same results on a larger tank. I'm not sure. It would be a fun experiment!

UGH!

A couple of rocks in the tank are showing signs of GHA again. I think the sudden increase in lighting spurred that mess back to life. I have reduced the lighting back to what I had it at a few weeks ago. I am also about to do a good sized PWC. I do not want to deal with this mess again!

Algae sure is a struggle. The use of distilled water rather than ro/di doesn't help in my situation. But one thing that I have been trying out is cutting all the red out of my lighting from my Radions. So far, it looks like it has slowed but time will tell. In the same move I cut the intensity down to 60% and have seen all of my dull coloring vanish into the colors they had when I bought them.

I hate hair algae. I feel your pain, luckly haven't had it in a good while. Still battling some bubble algae though, which has got to be better than the hair. I wish you best of luck!

I did a PWC last night and will do another this weekend. I will nip this before it gets out of control. I am pretty sure it was related to the increase in lighting. That was the only change that has taken place in the system.

Reduction of lighting will continue until I have all this under control. On a good note my float switches came in on Friday and I can get the ATO setup again.

I'm going to be mixing Kalk in the top off.

Awesome! I'll have to come by once you start dripping kalk to see how it's done correctly lol

Hey Ziggy. I have a question. Is dripping kalk better than dosing supplements?

I that depends on your system and maintenance routine. I typically do PWCs every other week so supplements aren't the best for me. Kalk keeps things balanced and buffers my ph. I'm sure there are a million different opinions on here on what you should do. I've done both. I've had better results with regular PWCs and kalk.

Take that for what you will. Every system is different..

So are you saying that you done have to do water changes when you dose chemicals? Am I understanding that correctly?
