It will grow back over time. There are antibiotics you can add to the water that will help it grow somewhat quicker, but mostly it just takes time. It shouldnt be deformed unless they really took off a lot.

Really it depends on the filter. Each one says how large of a tank it can handle, I would go by that before any formula.

save your money get a bigger tank. tinfoils get big quick.

You can change the water very frequently as long as you age the water (let it sit in buckets, i use a big 25 gallon storage bin) for a few days to get rid of the chlorine, and make sure the water you add is the same PH as the tank water.
