    Zebra danios doing poorly

Hi Everyone, I seem to have the most trouble with the fish that are supposed to be very tough. Usually it's the guppies, but this time, I am losing my zebra danios. Oddly, they are the only fish in the tank that seem to be affected. - other much more "sensitive" fishes are doing fine, including...

Third time's a charm for my proud GBR parents

My rams, which I have had for a couple of months now, have spawned twice before but without much luck. The first batch of eggs fungused and were eaten, and the second batch resulted in just a couple of relatively life-less wigglers who soon disappeared. But 3's a charm, because this time they...

    Banana Plant

Good to know - thought I was doing something wrong. :)

Name this algae, and what can I do... LOL

The only time I had problems with cyano was when I wasn't running CO2 and I had nitrate levels that were too high (40ppm). As soon as I got the nitrates down and started CO2, the cyano was gone. I also removed a lot of it manually - I had to throw out some floating plants, but I have to every...

    Starved fish

I love my Pristellas. They are very pretty and active little fishes. They are very tough tetras, I've noticed, who can tolerate a wide range of conditions. Mine spawn pretty frequently also, although, the eggs get eaten almost immediately.

    Banana Plant

Has anyone had the experience of the bananas dissolving? Mine were growing quite well, sending multiple shoots to the top, and you can actually see how much root mass they've grown (the roots are in the sand right up against the glass). Now the banana part is turning to mush, though.

    Guppy Fry Question

Depending on the strain, the sexes can be separated as early as one week, but definitely by 4 weeks. The females will have the small dark area on the abdomen (gravid spot), and the males will not. By three months, they could be breeding, so I wouldn't wait that long if you absolutely do not want...

Name this algae, and what can I do... LOL

That is exactly the kind of algae problem I am having in my tank! It's like you took a picture of my tank. I even have the algae-covered ozelot swords! Just replace the cabomba with bacopa and that's my tank. Wish I knew what it was. I had kind of assumed, since it's brownish, mushy, and pulls...

    GBR breeding set-up

Hello, First of all, which post said that your female ram's death was due to being overbred? I have two pairs of rams in my 46-gallon and one pair has spawned twice this month, so I'd like to know. I have my doubts as to whether or not that would be the case, assuming she received adequate...

Would this be a good CO2 diffuser?

I found an excellent glass diffuser for very cheap on eBay. It works very well with my DIY C02, producing very fine bubbles. Only concern might be that it produces a sound kind of like chirping birds due to the very fine bubbles. But it is really not that loud, and I can only hear it when...

Mixed up my ferts, need your help to ID them

Thanks guys, I can fertilize my tanks with confidence tomorrow. I was going to try the test kit thing but I had no idea how much to add of each to such a small quantity of water in order to get a valid test (i.e. too much and it can just precipitate out, giving a false negative result). And I...

Mixed up my ferts, need your help to ID them

Hi All, Well, I was in a hurry before I went out of town and mixed up the lids to my canisters of dry ferts. Oops! I have only been dosing them for a couple of weeks now and I can't remember which is which, but I know some lids got mixed up because the Plantex lid (the only one I know for sure)...

How to avoid nitrite spike after changing fine filter pads

I never change all the media at once. This is only referring to the very fine pads that are next to impossible to rinse, as Sherry mentioned. I can try to extend the life of the pad a little longer but the point of them is to be the final stage "water polisher," which doesn't work well when the...

How to avoid nitrite spike after changing fine filter pads

Hi All, I have begun changing my fine/micro filter pads on my canister filters every month to 5 weeks now, in accordance with manufacturer instructions, because I find that they become incredibly dirty and clogged in that time. Unfortunately, I have discovered that for the past two months, I...

hmmmm water is ok, why is fish dieing?

As an outside observer who just read this post for the first time, I would say he was laughing because there were so many replies asking for the same thing before he had a chance to reply and because some members were getting off-topic. There were at least four posts in a row all telling him to...
