    rummynose feeding habits?

I've had 4 rummynose for about a week now. They tend to swim in the low mid section of my aquarium. Initially, since they were new occupants and are smaller than my other fish (danios, rasboras, gourami) they were afraid to come to the surface with the other fish during feeding. Now, they...

What is that stuff that grows on uneaten food?

If I drop an algae or sinking wafer and it goes uneaten something fuzzy grows from it. What is it? Is it fungus? It's like a light fuzzy mould or fungus that grows on it. I usually remove them after they go uneaten for a day. But would shrimp eat this stuff? I have a shrimp only tank which...

Have you kept ghost shrimp with...

Just discovered that my one of my shrimp (cherry) is alive and well. It's been hiding during the day and only comes out at night. I don't have a clue about my other shrimp (yamato). So I guess my little red honey gourami doesn't eat shrimp after all. Which means I'll probably buy a few more...

    Oto Cats

I measured my otto and it's about 1 1/4" from head to tip of it's tail fin. I think it's reached its maximum size as it hasn't grown in months. They are amusing little creatures and great tank additions. I currently have two in a 38gal planted tank and I'm considering adding more or perhaps...

    What to feed a gourami?

I have a red honey gourami that eats just about anything. She'll eat freeze dried bloodworms and brine shrimp, flakes, pellets, algae wafers, sometimes algae off plants and driftwood, raw vegetables. She's constantly eating. I don't know how true this is of gourami's in general, but mines a...

    Gourami special needs?

I have a red honey gourami (not sure if it's the same as your species, perhaps) and she is a pig! :) Eats just about everything, flakes, pellets, sinking wafers, algae wafers, some algae, freeze dried blood worms and brine shrimp. I find that my gourami is constantly eating and naturally...

    Cherry Barb compatability

Cherry barbs are timid. Mine like to take cover in plants every so often but they come out as well. I have them with danios, rasbora's, gourami and guppies. All the other fish are quick in grabbing food and the barbs sometimes perfer to fetch whatever sinks rather than getting any first dibs...

What fish are you trying/did you succesfully breed?

I had baby guppies within 5 weeks of purchasing them, but it's not like I had to do anything special. :) Out of a fry batch of 17 I'm down to 5. Getting guppies to breed is one thing, taking care of the fry is another matter.

Have you kept ghost shrimp with...

I had a red honey gourami, two cherry barbs and a zebra danio in my tank when I introduced some shrimp. For the first two days I rarely saw them. I spotted one shrimp skimming the top surface late at night once, and I spotted my other shrimp along the bottom floor skimpering behind plants. I...

Are shrimp susceptible to parasites that infect fish?

Can shrimp get ich, fluke, or other external parasite, for instance and spread it or die from it?

    I got babies!!! <Java ferns>

One thing about those large Java Fern leafs with no roots is that they grow new baby plantlets quickly. My original Java Fern with rhizome and roots has grown only a few baby plantlets compared to the bunched Java leaves which has grown about 5-8 times more. They breed like guppies! :) I'm...

What to feed the little guys?

I've been feeding my guppy fry Hikari First Bites. It stays afloat nicely which gives my fry plenty of time to gobble it up. Once they became accustomed, they now know when it's feeding time and stay near the water surface most of the time. Hungry little buggers... :)

    Too late to add plants?

Just to let you know, I have cryptocorynes growing in ordinary gravel. I have my java ferns growing on rocks and bog wood and hornwort anchored by lead weights on top of the gravel. Real plants sure beat fake ones

    Graval/ Low light

I've got a low light tank as well. I'm growing Java Fern, Cryptocorynes Wendtii & Undulata and Hornwort. The crypts I've planted in my pea gravel, regular gravel in other words, and my ferns are growing on rocks or bogwood. My hornwort is anchored with weights, either tied up gravel or lead...

What brand/model/type/DIY lighting system do you use?

So, what type of lighting system do you use for your planted aquarium? What brand, model and type (flourescent, halide, compact) of lighting do you use and what's your aquarium size? If you've gone the DIY where did you get your material?

    Zebra Danios

My zebra danios tend to swim top level most of the time, but on occasion they will chase each other along the bottom. I even have a danio that scavenges for food at the bottom even now and then. But they are pretty hardy fish from what I've read.

Suggestions for new fish to add to my tank...

I've been thinking about the neons, as well, as adding 1 or 2 otos. I thought loaches are rather big. I've got a planted tank (java ferns, hornwort, crypt) with driftwood and bogwood, the loach may not be such a good idea if they burrow. But it would be nice to have another bottom feeder.

What veggies do you feed? Pics please!!

I fed my fish broccoli and my Oto's seem to enjoy them. My Red Honey Gourami also seemed to take an interest. I'm not sure if it managed to eat any of it, but it sure tried. After 2 days there was quite a bit eaten.. Next time I drop it in I'll try and capture some photos.

Suggestions for new fish to add to my tank...

Currently I own a 39 gal tank with: 6 Rasboras 4 Albino Zebra Danios 2 Cherry Barbs 1 Red Honey Gourami 2 Oto Cats I'm currently on the search for a new tank addition and I need some suggestions. I'm probably getting close to hitting my fish limit but I would like to add one more species...

Wanted: Quiet, affordable, 10 gal (or more) filter.

I have an Aquaclear 150 and it's quiet. The only noise I hear is from the rattle of the lid on occasion. Even the water ouput stream is very quiet depending on your tanks water level, especially compared to my Penguin Emperor 280. You probably just have a defective one which you should replace.

    My low light 55

Wow, nice tank BrianNY, I think a lot of people would be interested in what you are doing to maintain such a beautiful tank with only 1 WPG of lighting. What fertilizer are you using if any? What's your secret? And TankGirl, I'm going your route with low light plants and just water changes...
