    Untreated well water

My honest opinion is that Prime will be enough for a beta. I wish I had well water. I'm convinced that well water and even well water that has been through a water softener is the best thing for an aquarium.

    Plants goldfish will eat

I am planning on being out of town for about two weeks and I'd like to have plants for my goldfish to eat while I'm gone instead of using a time released feeding block or having someone come in and feed my fish. In the past I've had my fish eat most of my elodea but are there other plants I can...

    Neon tetras question

You could add at least 3 now and maybe more. You have used the old filer media so the bacteria are there are growing and with 60 gallons you have more water to dilute the harmful ammonia and nitrates and nitrites. Don't worry about it. Add more fish gradually. Go and put three more in and wait...

    feedings adf

I would recommend everyday using frozen blood worms and frozen brine shrimp. Pellets don't really do the job.

How many ADFs in 2.5 gallon?

You can have up to three or four. You do not have to cycle a tank for african dwarf frogs. They breathe air, but I would recommend twice weekly vacuuming of the gravel and do a 50 percent water change if you have more than two frogs.

    ADF Compatible Fish

ADF really don't bother other fishes but I had an ADF take nips at the flowing fins of a Beta and they would fight. The frogs do well in a community tank with peaceful fish. You need to make sure food like frozen brine shrimp or frozen blood worms sink to the bottom for them to eat. They have a...

plants that don't need to be planted

I would like some plants that don't require to be planted into the substrate. I know anubias is best tied to a rock or piece of driftwood and not planted. Are there other plants that are submerged but don't need to be planted in the substrate. I have a substrate that just won't work best with...

Why do people not like goldfish?

I like how they look and I find them interesting and in the right tank they are pretty. But as juveniles they can have a high death rate no matter how careful you are with the water changes and parameters. They are fairly active swimming around which is nice, but they are so messy. Their...

    Dying neon tetras

Neon tetras can just die off like that. I had a school of 8 about a year ago and now I am down to 1. About five of them seemed to die within 2 weeks of each. The one i have has been doing okay in a tank with black skirts and angel fish. Small tetras like neons, bloodfin, and glow lights just...

It might be a Buenos Aires?

I got a new used tank... Help

In my opinion you don't need to use bleach. Just scrub it out good and make sure it air dries completely.

    New 29 gallon tank build!

The filter will work, but some will tell you go a step up in the logic that you can never have too low of filter power.

    Temp

    Yes, if that's about 75F

    Temp

The mid 70s will be fine. You could go as low as 74, but 76 would be about right. Tropical fish have a much broader range than people realize. 65 to about 80 is what most tropical fish can live in. I'd say no higher than 76 to keep more O in the water.

Fancy always hanging at top of tank..why?

Most likely not enough oxygen in the water. What's the temp? As temperature rises the O in the water decreases.

    tetra shoal.

Two species of tetras is fine. You could even do three schools of 6-7 of them. I would recommend looking at bloodfin tetras. Little bigger than glow lights and they look nice and school together nicely.

    Ideas for tank background

Another thing you can do is paint the back of the tank. I've don't that before and it's great.

    Ideas for tank background

I would recommend some paper that's dark blue or dark green. Simple and cheap and the fish will like it.

    Rocks/driftwood

If it's your typical rock then yes. Granite or quartz will be fine. You may wish to boil it though in water or wash it in bleach and rinse very well. Now some folks will tell you never to do that and go to a pet store, but you can put garden rocks in your aquarium. Driftwood is trickier. I...

suggest feeding variety for my fish

Yeah, variety is good and it gives them different nutrients with each type of food. I'm thinking of maybe freeze-dried tubifex worms or some other frozen food.

suggest feeding variety for my fish

I have six neon tetras, six blood fin tetras and four black skirt tetras in a 35 gallon Hexagon tank. I currently rotate on a daily basis, frozen bloodworms, frozen brine shrimp, and Omega One freshwater flakes. Any suggestions to increase the variety?

    Substrate change a possiblity?

The plan you have is fine. I think you could replace a quarter of the gravel at a time. Make sure to do tests. I would wait a week between gravel changes. Beneficial bacteria live throughout your aquarium but the surface are of the gravel and or substrate and the fact that wastes go to the...

    Substrate change a possiblity?

Others may disagree with me, but the majority of your beneficial bacteria live in the gravel. You may have to do more partial water changes, but the majority of your bacteria do not live in filter media. They live in the gravel.

    Substrate change a possiblity?

You potentially face huge problems with your beneficial bacteria and your biological filter. The majority of your beneficial bacteria live on your gravel due to the greater surface area and the fact that much of what they feed on is in the gravel. You may go through another cycling period which...
