I dont know much about tropical fish, but i do know that a 3ft deep pond with little cover in full TX sun can get into the low 90's. For doing tropical fish outdoors, i know there is guy who runs a pet store in New Braunfels that keeps cichlids. I tried to find the name/number but i couldnt...

    Lilly Pads Being Eaten

Yes koi do eat the greens on plants....all plants. However i dont think they eat the roots, or at least i just havent seen that yet. They do dig in the dirt in search for blood worms though. That could be mistaken as eating roots....

This post may be a little late, but that is common dont worry about it. It is just part of the nostril. Some koi have it some dont... i guess it depends on the breeding. It is really common among Goldfish.

Need brand new pond constrution help!

well depending on what you are goig to put in your pond it probably wont be that important. If you are just doing Koi and Goldfish, they can handle such a wide range of PH u probably wont have any issues. I know that you could use fiberglass resin on water proof your concrete but i dont know...

how many gph needed per foot of height?

To accuratly judge what size of pump you will need u need to get a rough estimate on what your head height will be. You start measuring your head hieght at water level from the pond surface that the pump is in. Head height does not just mean how far the pump has to pump verticly. For instance...

pond plants for zone 8 central Texas

I would shy away from the Koi, because they get big no matter what. Even only say 3 koi 2ft long (which can take them as little as 2yrs) in 400-500 gal have a HUGE biological impact on the pond. You cannot stock ponds like aquariums, because you not only have to fight all the bioloads from your...

pond plants for zone 8 central Texas

In TX a majority of the floating plants such as Hyacinth and Lettuce are illegal to have. I have HEARD that the fine is in the $250 range...so be careful. One more submergable plant that is really nice in Cabomba, but its likes cooler shady water. If you are intrested in water lilies...

From my understanding you can get away with just NO lights. Coraline should still grow but it wont be enough for really anything besides algae and fish.

    Waterfall Pump?

I wouldnt use that pump for an aquarium. Waterfall pumps are very high torque motors, so they can pump large volumes of water very very high, so there for they are very inefficient. That pump probably uses atleast twice the amount of power as a standard 1800 or 2400 pondmaster.

    Wet/dry Nitrate Factory?

Ok someone correct me if im wrong..... If you are trying to get rid of both nitrites and nitrates, couldn't you have a your wet/dry system to harvest your aerobic bacteria to convert your ammonia and nitrites. Then in your sump put more bio balls or some other media where they will be...

    Bubbler, ice, and doming

You dont need the bubbler for 2 reasons. Your fish are using very very little oxygen being that cold. Also cold water holds much more oxygen than warm water so the natural exchange of gasses though the hole made by the deicer is plenty.

how many gph's should a pump be for a pond?

the minimum for the water volume is 1/2 the ponds volume an hour for filtration, anything after that would be purely for decorative purposes such as a water fall or fountian. If you have a waterfall take into account the height you will be pumping it as it wil decrease your flow.

    pop up pond??

if you want something small. i would go with a whiskey barrel, you can get real ones make of wood and there are also plastic ones. I have seen H-E-B carry the real ones at times for $15. Now remember if you get a real wooden whiskey barrel i would soak it for a min of 1 week then empty all the...
