    green algae during cycle

My cycle has been going for about 3 weeks now. Yesterday I noticed green algae beginning to grow on the sand and the rocks. Is the green algae normal, because I thought there was supposed to be brown diatoms first, which I haven't noticed? I have 85 lbs of reef bone, and 80 lbs of play sand (...

    cycling

OK I have finally got things up and running. I have a 4 in. DSB, a seaclone skimmer, fluval 304, and 2 penguin 660 ph's. I put a raw piece of shrimp in the tank about 3 days ago. Last night I tested the water for just ammonia, nitrate, and pH. Ammonia is .6, trate is .5, and pH is 7.7. Will...

    ich or just bad water?

My grandfather has a 55 gal community tank. He has 5 angels, a large parrot fish, a powder blue gourami, and 4 cories. In the past week he has lost a large pleco and all the cories. The tank has been running for about 6 months. He told me that his parrot fish has white spots on its fins and...

    a new beginning

Well, I've been away from this site for almost a month now. The withdrawls have been aweful  . Anyways, I am doing things right this time (for those who don't know I moved and tore down my tank). I have base rock curing, plenty of salt to get started, and a seaclone protein skimmer. I...

    starting over

Well I tore my tank down last week. I had hair algae, cyno, and aptasia running rampid. I decided that the best thing would be to sell the fish back to the lfs and start over right. I just cleaned out the tank and I am going to begin curing the base rock that I have. The owner of the lfs...

    Pico tanks?

I just seen the post by hyewiz and was in awe. I have a 2.5 gal that I thought about putting corals in a while back and it is now just sitting on a table with about 2 inches of aragonite sand on the bottom. I didn't do anything because I thought that it wouldn't be able to handle the bioload...

    otos

I had a gold mystery snail and a siamese algae eater in my tank, but the algae eater rode he carpet and the snail has passed away. I've noticed some algae beginning to form on the back of the tank every now and then and want to get a few otos. The inhabitants in my tank are in my sig. How...

    non photosynthetic corals

If a coral that is not photosynthetic (sun coral and chili coral in particular) do they need anything besides regular feeding and good water quality. Basically what I am asking, can they flourish with NO lighting? Also, what are some other types of non photosynthetic corals?

    Cyno's Revenge

There are signs of cyno in my tank again. I have battled it in the past and won, but it has come back for seconds. After testing the water quality, I believe that tap water may be the culprit. Ammonia = 0, Nitrites = 0, Nitrates = 0, PO4 = 0. The lights are on 9 hrs per day, and the fish are...

Coral Beauty, Purple Firefish, or none?

Well, it's been almost a year, and besides a bout with cyno, I have had no problems. My current stocking list is in my sig and I want to add one more fish. I love the coral beauty, but I know that it may be pushing the stocking limits. My params are zeroed out and have been for a while. I...

    ANGEL EGGS!!!!!

I've noticed my angels hanging out together a lot lately, mostly by the filter intake. Today I took a peek at them, and the intake was covered in eggs  . I watched the female lay a few of them. I've been keeping my eye on my guppy because she is pregnant, but I had no idea about the...

    Orange Knobby Star?

I bought this star at the lfs and it was labled "Orange Knobby Star". I've done a few searches on knobby stars and I cannot seem to find any that look similar. Has any one seen this star that can varify that it is in fact, an orange knobby star? It spends most of its' time hiding, and this is...

    Angel fins

I've noticed since I've moved my FW fish from a 10 gal to a 29 gal, that the angels ventral fins have grown to almost 2 inches in about a month. They were hardly noticeable in the 10 gal, but now they a large and exquisite. Is this a normal thing because now they have room to "spread their wings"?

    Too much live rock?

Is it possible to have too much lr? I have 62 lbs right now, and a guy I know with a 280 gal tank is taking some of his out to make room for more corals. He just gave me about 15 lbs +/-, but it was out of water for a week so I am cleaning it and getting it ready to add to my tank as reef bone...

    Nice surprise

I came home the other day and found a new fish in my tank :D . My wife had went out and purchased a bi-color dotty back and an orange knobby star. They were both acclimated for an hour and a half and have been active for 2 days now, well not the star so much, but it looks healthy. I have read...

    Breeding gouramis

Lately I have been getting very involved with my aquariums. I spend most of my time with my SW tank, but since I moved my FW from a 10 gal to a 29 gal, I have been given them more attention. I am very fascinated with my angels, but the gouramis have cought my attention in other ways. I have...

    Star fish poops a lot

I've noticed that my choc chip star is excreting daily or every other day lately. Is that normal. It may be that I have been watching the tank more lately, and haven't noticed before, but of the past week I have seen him up against the glass 5 times turned inside out. He did lose a "chip" a...

    green algae

All my LR is covered in green algae. Some of it is coraline, but there is a lot of it. It is not hair algae or any real nusiance (I think). I have to clean the glass only about once per week. I am just wondering if that is normal. The tank has been up and running for 6 months. Tested...

    stocking suggestions

I have an empty 30 gal and an empty 10 gal tank. I want to use the 10 gal as a sump and make the 30 gal a reef. My 55 gal fowlr doesn't have the really bright colors that I would like, so I would like to make the 30 gal as colorful as possible. I was thinking about a yellow watchman goby...

    pistol or mantis shrimp?

I've noticed some clicking in my tank lately. Haven't added any LR in a while. It is usually 3 or more clicks. I think that it may be a pistol or mantis shrimp, but I am not sure on which. It may also be my imagination, becuase I haven't seen anything, but I know they like to hide.

    serpent star?

I believe I found a serpent star in my tank. I was looking in the tank at night and see what I originally thought was a bristle worm, but the coloring was off. It had white and black stripes. I thought maybe a serpent star, but I only seen one "worm". Yesterday I seen the same black and...

    Planted tank

My mts is getting out of hand now, but I like the look of a planted tank. I have been inspired by some of the awesome tanks that have been posted. Is a CO2 diffuser neccessary for a planted tank? Besides a filter and heater, is there any other equipment that is NEEDED. I have a 29 gal...

    coral frags

My lfs has some coral frags for $5. I have 4 NO 40 watt tubes for lighting, 1 03, 1 50/50, and 2 6500k. I know I should have 5 watts/gal, but I was wondering if some zoos or shrooms may survive with that kind of lighting. They are pretty cheap and don't look unhealthy.
