Algae problem

My tank is being taken over by brownish/reddish hair-like algae.
Every rock in the tank is completely covered with it.

Fish seems to feel good, but it looks hm.... not very pleasant

Please describe it in more detail, does it come off in sheets? or is it hard to pluck off of things? Please also describe your tank details, how long has it been set up, what is the water chemistry and what equipment are you using.

what kind of water do you use. have you tested for nitrates, phosphates if so what are the numbers.
