Very different (in some ways) for SA and CA cichlids.

Driftwood is always a plus, but not strictly needed. Plants will most certainly be uprooted unless you keep certain ones like apistos, angels, discus, rams, and some others.

Eartheater aficionados often prefer sand (or at least fine gravel) as it allows the eartheaters to sift away. Aome apisto keepers also swear by this. Many discus keepers prefer no substrate at all. Most cichlids dig, so they will put the sand/gravel where they want it. Rockwork should be firmly on the tank bottom (or on plastic egg crate diffuser grating on the bottom) as many cichlids will dig under it if it's placed on the substrate.

Cave spawners appreciate flowerpots on their sides as caves (sometimes with the bottoms knocked out with a ball peen hammer). Rockwork and large driftwood and many hiding places help with aggressive species as the losers can hide or get out of sight. It also helps to establish territories - although sometimes with some species no (or little) decor helps as the fish can't get quite as territorial.

It really varies widely with species - there are no hard and fast rules that apply to all of them.
