Bacteria

Don't use those products that claim to add good bacteria as something can only live so long in a bottle and chances are, the bacteria is dead, even worse, the dead bacteria could have become toxic...

As far as I know, there's no way to measure the bacteria in your tank other then checking ammo, NO2 and NO3 levels. Just hang in there, and let the aquarium run it's full course, the bacteria will will appear on it's own. If you want to speed the process up, barrow some used filter media or gravel from a friend with a cycled and healthy tank.
 
During the cycling process, you are working on building up two things.... your beneficial bacteria..... and your level of patience. ;)
