Okay so I've had this 5 gal tank for almost 3 months. It would NOT cycle. The fish died right off but the frog lived.

I gave up on water changes because that was doing NOTHING. A few weeks ago, it started getting this brown algae...which I looked up and it said that was normal in new tanks. I hadn't tested the water in a few weeks, because I was so frustrated with it. Well, I did this morning and here's what I got:

Ammonia looks good, Nitrites look good, NitRATE is high. However, in the past when I tested it, there was 0 Nitrate, so this is more good than bad, right?
Will some water changes finally get my tank to where it needs to be so I can finally get my kids some fish??? Input please!

do a couple water changes, dose 2 ppm of ammonia and see if it turns to trates over 24 hours. if it does, do another water change and then add fish. You're pretty limited in a 5, I would do a betta.
