Looking to start a cichlid tank possibly

A 16g is pretty small for most cichlids as African grow between 3-6inches and American are a little bigger in most cases. You could possible do some shell dwellers like lamprologus ocellatus. I had a 20g with 4 for a awhile and the fun and breed really fast.

I dont think you will be able to put more than two or three larger cichlids in without having problems.
 
Yeah I would agree not too many options on cichlids. Shell dwellers would work.
 
Google these shell dwelling cichlids: Neolamprologus multifasciatus and Neolamprologus brevis. Either of these cichlids would be a good option for your size tank. I haven't seen too many of these in lfs, so you may have to order them online if you want them. You could also try asking your lfs if they could order them for you.
