Following these criteria, how would you stock a 55 tank?!

-mostly schooling or shoaling fish
-Some sort of pleco in there
-non aggressive communitty
-some kind algae eater/bottom feeder
-all fish must be able to live out there entire lives in this tank

Now be specific, give details about how you'd set it up.

12 rummynose tetras (schooling fish)
1 bristlenose pleco (algae eater)
8 corydoras (bottom feeder)
4 German blue rams (centerpiece fish)

500 red chery shrimp

That was a joke, if I were to stock a 55g I would stock it like I have mine. If I were to stock a Second 55, I would venture into the African cichlid side of things, I love all the color.

Hmmm....

15 neon tetras
10 green cories
1 pleco (I know nothing about plecos, so lets say bristlenose)

As you can see, its obviously understocked, but it would make up for it when you go with a planted setup :D

Either a blue Acara or a livebearer and Cory tank with a peacock eel

Rummy nose are semi aggresive

Rummy nose are semi aggresive

I've kept rummy nose off and on since the 80's and they aren't aggressive. They school pretty tight in larger groups and never seen or heard of nipping in the species. There are alot of tetra's that could be considered semi-agressive but not rummy's. I currently have a school of 21 with angels, threadfin rainbowfish, long fin white clouds, cardinals, and others.

I would do a planted tank with driftwood. Fish:
*6 Threadfin rainbowfish or 6 Marble hatchets (for top level swimmers)
*8 to 10 Rummynose or 8 to 10 Cardinal tetras
*1 Pair of German Blue rams or Bolivian rams (a 55g is only big enough
to support 2 without major fighting for territory)
*1 or 2 Honey gouramis (they also come in Sunset and Golden Honey
color varieties)
*1 longfin albino bristlenose pleco
* 6 Cory cats (either Panda's or Julii's)
This stocking allows for alot of color and movement throughout the tank in different swimming levels.

I love "what ifs"
10 Black Phantom Tetras (5 male, 5 female)
6 Cardinal Tetras
10 Black Neons
6 Bronze Cories
6 Julii Cories
Never had a pleco but bristle nose seems to be the one of choice, but I'd do 6 otos instead.

I'd moderatly plant with layers of plants in the back corners, some in the substrate, some on wood, and some floating but anchored to the corners somehow to add layers. Put some kind of cool "treeish" decor in the back middle, get dark substrate and red marlbe stone looking things mixed into it to add accent and set off the black phantoms! It looks pretty in my head, lol.

1+ bnp
4+ gbr
8+ panda corys
14+ glolight tetra
Imo a 55g is big enough for 2 pair of gbr and i know my list has 27 fish on it and seems a little much but i think it's doable because most of these have a smallish bioload. With a planted setup and the right filtration along with significant pwc's you'd be fine.

2 angels
2 rams
a rapheal cat or clown pleco
10 marble hatchets
10 rummy nose tetras

I'd put extra filtration on it. So something like an Aquaclear 70 or 2 50s.

this personally is my dream 55 gallon. With sand bottom and nicely planted.

Definitely looking at a community setup. But as you said, unless I were doing a community, I'd go with Africans any day. BUT LET'S FOCUS ON A COMMUNITY

So far I'm thinking:
-12 neon tetra
-8 corydoras
-8 marble hatchets
-6 Australian rainbow fish
-kuli loaches, but not sure how many, suggestions?
-2 clown pleco
-suggestions as for what else?

We are in the same boat here the plan for my 55 gallon is
10x neon tetras
5x glass catfish
5x cherry barbs
1 bristlenose Pleco
4x Juili catfish
2x German blue rams
Maybe 2 flame gourami

Do you think a peacock eel would work well in a live bearer tank? I've been thinking of adding one but I don't know because of my kuhli loaches.
