Perch colors

I have a few small perch in my aquarium. I know they don't have the brightest colors but they do have some. However, they are really dark in my tank. Like almost black. Is this due to just the type of lights or is it something else?

It could be the color of your substrate. Or maybe it's just the mood there in.

I'll post photos tonight. I have white gravel out of the creek. And they do change colors from dark to light but they are almost always dark
