I was going through forums and would sometimes notice people using * for the e. Why do they do this?

It's a really old myth. Back in the formative days of the internet, someone wrote about their pleco...soon after, the pleco died.
They began using the * instead of the "e" when they had others and none of them died.
Some folks still believe in it and will use * instead of "e" all the time.

I always wondered that too. I just assumed maybe their e key didn't work or maybe they just really didn't know how to spell.

I heard a slightly modified version... that you can say "pleco", but that if you say "plecostomus" then yours will snuff it.
