Seachem Prime question

I have noticed when I add prime to fresh water and do an ammonia test, it tests positive. Is this normal? Does Prime have a shelf life and I possibly have an old bottle of it? Is this a 'false' reading?

Yes it converts the ammonia to a less lethal type, And it stinks!
