What is the most efficient way to seed a new canister filter from a tank with an old canister filter already on it?

The best is to move the filter media from on filter to the other.
If this isn't an option, an on the assumption you're keeping the same tank just changing filter, the best you can do is run both filters for around a month before switching off the old canister. You will go through a mini cycle at this point so be on your game with water changes but this shouldn't last more than a day or two.
