I would eventually like to change the sorts of fish I have in my tank. It is a 35g or 160l tank. I don't know whether to concentrate on tetras, or live bearers or both. What are your thoughts?

Tetras or Rasboras.

Livebearers are pretty, but the constant chasing of the females and too many fry aren't my thing. Some of the rarer Livebearers are very cool tho.

I vote tetras as well, I've always preferred them over livebearers. There are so many different kinda to choose from and they bring an interesting dynamic to the tank. Also less of a worry about overpopulation.

I like to do groups of fish from the same region. Examples:

South America - Tetras, Corys, dwarf cichlids, plecos, etc.

SE Asia: Barbs, danios, rasboras, loaches, etc.

Many possibilities

This is all interesting and has given me lots to think about. Thank you everyone.

I vote live bearers! The combo of a bunch of male guppies with a male swordtail would look amazing!

Is it possible to put rasboras in with tetras?

Yes it is.
The problem with tetras/rasboras is that they all swim in the middle/top of the tank. IME

With livebearers, IME, they swim all over the tank.
