Tiger Barbs

When a tiger is only a half inch (at most), I can't sex them. However, I'm sure they can know who is male and who is female.

How unusual is it for some in a small shoal (5-6) to fight to the death, be it male dominance or whatever? What conditions could increase the chances of the ultimate fight?

I have 9 Tigers in my tank and have no problems with them fighting.

I believe the females have a more rounded belly than the males. So Im figuring I have 4 females and 5 males and the dominant male has the brightest coloring. He runs the show.
