I have have a tropical fish tank that has sand in the bottom but when ever i have come to do a water change and get the rubish of the bottom it is sucking up the sand can anyone tell me how to not suck up the sand is there a trick or something towards doing it

Try bending the end of the tube that is going into the bucket to make the force of the siphon less. Just play around with it a bit.
 
If you hold the siphon/python (whatever your using) at a certain angle while cleaning up the substrate, it will drop the sand back down to the bottom instead of sucking it up into the bucket.
 
Hold the end of the vac an inch or so above the sand. Use a gentle swirling motion to get the waste to float up off of the sand and into the vac.
