Plant feeding advice

I just got a 6 gallon Fluval Edge, to use for a Betta. I plan to add a few live plants, not a true planted aquarium.
I will eventually replace the 21 led light with the 42 led made for the 12 gallon Edge.
Should I add a plant substrate, or just go with a gravel layer and a liquid fertilizer, ThriveS ?
