They have been gradual. I just noticed the swelling yesterday. The salt bath was in response to the swelling.

In my opinion it looks a little raw.

Another quick question- do you live in the US? I dont need to know where but i am trying to figure out what you have access to meds-wise. Some countries are very strict in respect to fish meds.

Oh, as a side note, he seemed to enjoy the salt bath. He hasnt seemed that calm and happy in a while.

Salt can be very soothing & it helps reduce the toxicity of nitrite. He's still in the 10g, correct? I would mix a single flat tablespoon of salt into a cup of tank water & gradually add it over the course of a few hours. When you do water changes, only add back the amount of salt you are removing (ie- 50% pwc, add back only 1/2 tablespoon mixed in cup tank water). In the meantime, go to Goldfish Connection: Goldfish Care, Goldfish, Goldfish Health, Goldfish Disease, Goldfish Pictures, Goldfish Ponds, Goldfish Types & order some of their 'medi-gold' food (8oz bag). Lets give the salt (in his tank) a try & see if he improves with salt & healthy water. If he does not improve or gets worse, i want you to continue the low dose of salt & try the medi-gold for a course of treatment. Healthy water is super important here so stay on top of your water tests & changes. The medi-gold is good to have on hand even if you dont need to use it right now. :)

note- look on the left side of the pg on the Goldfish Connections site & you will see a list for their shop then look under 'medicated foods'

Thank you! I will give it a try!

I am also working on getting a bigger tank. Maybe for Valentines day!

Def check out craigslist for tanks- i have found some great deals! I dont know if Petco is still having its $1 a gallon sale (i think it may end this wknd) but you can check that out too. An upgrade will be great for him & if you get something atleast 30g, you can get him another goldie buddy! We will help you with the upgrade too! Keep us posted on how he is doing!! :)

PetCo is running the deal. So I think I could easily go get the tank....

However, I don't think I could afford the filter and stuff now.

So my question is, how bad would getting a 30 gal tank and only having a filter for a 10gal be?

Hmm...not really a good idea for the reason that all of the water will not be circulated (and exposed to your bacteria for conversion). Could you get away with it really short-term? Possibily, with alot of aeration & daily water changes. I would check out amazon & ebay for deals on filters- i have bought some big hobs on amazon for less than half of what they cost in petco/petsmart. Worth checking out!

If money's really tight you can run the 10g filter and another smaller filter together and reach the same amount of filtration. Then when money permits upgrade the two filters to one large one that can handle you tank.

I am looking on Amazon now. Do you have any recomendations on brands or types?

Depends on the size of tank your looking at. Hobs will obviously be the cheaper option. I know alot of people use Aquaclears but i am happy with my Aqueons & Marineland Emperor biowheel filters. The marineland filters are a bit noiser though. You want to aim for 10x the filtration for the size of your tank (minimum). So, on a 30gal you want a filter that filters atleast 300gph (gallons per hour), 40gal needs 400gph, etc. :)

I am not sure how big, I am thinking maybe a 40 gal because thats a good round dollar amount to spend. And I would be able to get more fishies!

I am looking at this one.

Marineland Penguin Power Filter, 50 to 70-Gallon, 350 GPH

Lets work on getting your fish healthy first! If your looking at 40g, i would check out the Marineland Emperor (400gph) filter. Filters are typically under-rated for the size of atnk, thats why the gph is important. Let us know how things work out for you & what you find! :)

I have decided due to weight issues I am going to go with the 29 gallon tank. I still have to figure out something for it to sit on. Currently Manny's tank is on a glass console table, but I don't think putting 300lbs on that is a very good idea. Money is an issue though so I will probably get the tank, but it will take me some time to find something for it to sit on.

Manny seems to be feeling a bit better today. His tummy looks better. I was able to get a decent look at it this morning. I was not able to get pics.... he isn't very cooperative about pictures.

I am a bit dissapointed because I though cycling had started yesterday due to the fact that there was nitrite and ammonia levels were very low everytime I checked, but today ammonia was back up to .50 to 1.0 and there was no nitrite and nitrate was the same. :(

I am confused about the cycling. Is the salt effecting it?

Salt has no effect- just think, people cycle sw tanks all the time! Just keep on your testing & doing your water changes to keep him as healthy as possible. :)
