Just wondering what they are and do I need them in my twenty gallon planted tank??????

If you have rooted plants (as opposed to just stem plants), like crypts or swords, then yes, you should use root tabs.

Since sand is inert you need to use root tabs especially if you have swords, crypts, and tiger lotus.

For the sake of simplicity, root tabs are a kind of plant food fertilizer. Just like gardeners or farmers put fertilizer into the soil to grow healthier plants, aquarists add root tabs into the sand to keep their plants healthy. Not all aquarium plants can feed from them but nearly any plant that sends roots into the soil will get a boost.

Think of it like sinking wafers for bottom feeding fish. They're kind of like that, but for root feeding plants. Liquid ferts are used for plants that prefer to get their food from the water, just like top feeding fish. Most planted tanks do best when both the substrate and the water have fertilizers added to feed the plants. Hope that made sense. lol

Phew! You're so so welcome. I'm glad that made some sense. I'm pretty tired and my explanations don't always come across very clear. ~_~ lol
