I've kinda got a problem... I was going to use sand, and I still kinda want to, but the lady at the lfs told me it would ruin my filter... Not sure if she knows what she's talking about or not. Lol but she seemed really against it. I have a Penguin bio-wheel 350 filter. She said the sand would get sucked up and ruin the wheel. What do you guys think? What kind of filter do you use?

I use sand on all my tanks n i use that same filter with no problems however depeding on how low your intake is to the sand and if its a lighter sand it can ruin your filter but i dont think your gonna have problems... i use the blasting sand and its heavier so it doesnt move as much when the fish start moving it around to their liking..then i also have the more expensive sand from the lfs and its thinner but still isnt a problem i just make sure to unplugg my filter when i start moving sand

I've had my intake an inch off my sand bed with no issues...can using sand cause issues? Yes. Will it definitely cause issues? No. It's case to case, but I run sand in 2 out of my 4 tanks (and those other 2 are just 6.6 gallon planteds)

Use pool filter sand. It's a heavier grain which is less likely to kick up. I use it and no problems so far

Please don't use play sand. I know that a lot of people on here use it but I have had a terrible experience with it. It never let the water stop being cloudy and ruined two of my filters.

Pool filter sand, not play sand :) yes I've heard that too. I don't really like the way it looks either.
