Whilst waiting for sponge filter help replies, I am also curious...

What would come of an HM Plakat female and a VT male?

All VT fry, maybe with a little thicker set of body than the average VT depending in the lineage of the PK.

VT is the most dominant tail type out there and regaurdless of why you breed to it, you'll end up with CT's with messy finnage whic is why people so commonly recommend against mixing tail types.

Also long fins are always more dominant than short. Say you wanted to get CTPK, you'd have to breed the CT to the PK in the first generation, you'd get all CT's the 2nd generation, but they'd have the PK geno. Breed a fry from that spawn back to the parent PK and your F2 would be about 1/2 and 1/2 ct with PK geno and some CTPK. Then do an F3 back to the original, grandmother/father PK and you should end up with all CTPK in that spawn.

It's much easier to stay with the known tail types and not mix than it is to mix. Generally unless you have time to work 3 generations of line breeding, you'll end up with messy finned fish.

Oh and what was the sponge filter question?

And thanks so much!

I'm asking because I may have found a deal on some HMPK females but do not have any plakat males. Just VTs.

Living in Canada sucks for getting good deals on fish!

Get a plastic or stainless steel washer for the airline and it should help weight it.

Check with chard56 on here, he has great deals on HMPK males actually, great deals on all his fish

Haha, you just lined out the plans for what I'm trying to do right now! Get some nice CTPKs.

Good luck! I always wanted to do a line of them, but don't he enough tanks for projects that wouldn't sell well for the first couple generations. I am really considering buying them already as CTPK's and working on my own color line, probably fancy. Right now I'm only doing HM and HMPK although Chard56 sent me a true purple double tail that should be here tomorrow..I'd really like to do something with that coloring

Thanks. I'm growing out my spawn from my black HMPK male and a dark blue CT female right now. I can't wait to see their coloring!

Wow he is beautiful. Everywhere around here has horrible betta choices. I want to breed and sale bettas but havnt found the pair I like yet.

Here's my sorority/community tank, 20g, 10 happy female bettas, 2 marble algae eaters, 1 male betta in internal barrack, and 3 male bettas in divided external circulated barrack. This tank will eventually become a grow out tank as I'm working on setting up my 30g for them. :)

Also, the new grow out tank! 20g, got the sponge filter set up!

My betta fry are now 4 1/2 weeks old. When should I move them from the 10g breeding tank to the grow out tank? And what's the best way to get the little guys out? Please note there are only about 8-10 fry.

With only 8-10 fry, I wouldn't worry About it. With 20+ then I'd move them at around 2 months. Sucking them up with airline tubing is the best method i have tried so far

I wish my iPhone was better at close ups!

That's why I haven't bothered taking pics of mine yet. They are tiny and fast, and I know I couldn't manage any good shots yet.

I was getting tired of having no pics of the baby fish to show anybody, and I was lucky that little guy was hanging around the top. Plus, my LFS wants to see what they look like! They're very interested in this new hobby of mine.

And thanks! Pepper is very pretty. However, I decided to pair Zippo and Thing2.

What the hell. Why not?

Thing2 is iridescent blue with orange pectorals and a couple small orange spots on her anal fin.

My backup female is Thing1 haha. They look almost identical except for the bit of orange on Thing2.

Yeah, my LFS is excited at the prospect of a local betta breeder, too. And she has been getting in fancier males lately, like doubletails and dumbo ears. However I am trying to avoid any new fish or tanks at the moment, since I am moving across town later this month and the tanks I have will be enough of a pain to move. But in the new place I will have a dedicated fish room! Mostly dedicated to betta breeding. I think my next spawn will be my black hmpk Ninja with my red crowntail. I am planning to work towards a ctpk line, so I will be playing with colors for now so I can work the best looking ones I can make. Once I get set up in the new place I want to add more breeding males. As of now I only have one that I want to breed - the other two I adore but they are "mutts" without qualities I want to work with.
