Looking at canisters, Hoping for a good, quiet, powerful one for my 55 gallon. Any ideas of a good one I should get?
I have a magnum 200 and its amazing at keeping water clear.

Are they quiet?
Yes I sleep 10 feet away from it and I can't hear it.
Hmm ok. Anyone ever try Eheim, Fluval, or the Magnum ones?
Filstart XP3!!

Sorry to "butt in" haha but I have a Fluval and Its great! I highly recommend Fluval canisters, I have a 406 running in my bedroom and as long as the water output hose is fully submerged I can barely hear a slight "humming" sound coming from inside my wooden stand/cabinet. I use the basic filter media that's provided - Bio-Foam, Carbon, BIOMAX and a water polishing pad and the water stays extremely clean and cyrstal clear.

+1
I have a 306, I absolutely love it. Clearest water I've ever had.
Pretty quiet too?
What's the difference between using canister filters vs hob? Like I'd there any significant difference? Or just clearer water
Canister= 100x better than hob
Yes they are worth the price. Much better filtration, quieter, not as ugly, got any other questions?
Extremely. This phrase is said alot but its true, I literally have to put my ear to the filter to check if its running haha.

I run a filstar xp4 on my 55 and its the same price as a fluval 406. But the rena filstar is A LOT more powerful and more media room. Fluvals are ok but the xp3 is also great for 55 gals. Mine is pretty "over filtered" but xp3s should do the work too. The only good eheim is the classic series IMO. Marineland c-series is also pretty good but more expensive. Out of all of them, the rena filstar xp3/4 are definitely the best bang for the buck IMO.
Fluval 306= up to 75 gal ( kinda under filtered for a 55 ) you usually want at least twice your tank size for the recommended filter. Ex.- 50 gal tank you want a filter for at least 100 gal tanks.
Fluval 406= up to 100 gal ( better but I would go higher )
Rena xp3= I think it was around 160-180 gallons ( pretty good )
Rena xp4= up to 267 gal ( very good )
