Help!!! I came home to my black moor goldfish missing some of the skin one his eye!
This is a 50 gallon tank I recently acquired. The water quality is poor right now. Nitrates are probably 40 to 80+ nitrite is 0 and ammonia 0. Temp is 24 as the tank came with other tropicals aswell. Some have been moved to a tropical tank but there is still a few in the tank that can't be in the other tank. I recently did a water change I'm.worried the new ornament I had hurt him. I added melafix. But I really don't know what to do. Any advice would be awesome.

How'z he doing? Clean, pristine water is the best fix for injuries - just make sure you keep up with your water changes and be patient - keep an eye on your levels. Aquarium salt can help as well.

He is swimming around. He's active. Seems fine. I will continue with water changes and melafix.

I would remove any decorations with sharp edges - may have been the cause of the injury

I did remove the only new ornament that was newly added. It seems to have spread to the other eye. But the first eye is healing?

I'm not an expert, but it might be the water temperature and the tank mates - goldfish are cold water fish and should only have other goldfish as tankmates. Plecos are known to suck on goldfish.

Could you try setting up a hospital tank for your goldfish with colder water, to see if the cooler water and no Pleco helps?

I was thinking that too. I will turn down the temp. I have moved most if the tank mates to a different tank.

Great!

It will be important to keep the water pristine to aid healing of the eyes.

Let me know how the little guy goes.

His eyes are completely healed. But now he is very lethargic. I have handfed him some blood worms to give him energy. The water quality is still poor so I'm going to do a 50% water change. And see if that helps. Here's a pic of him.

He is looking miserable, poor little guy.

One of his eyes looks like it has "burst" - is that correct? Also, his back looks curved - just the photo?

Could you test the water with an API liquid test kit and let me know the results?

Please try an 80% water change after doing the test.

Sending positive vibes for your little guy - will wait to hear from you...

His breathing is slow. I have no clue how he got sick. He's been fine for years. He just got sick so fast. ?

The poor little guy looks utterly miserable. Are you able to post the water parameters - do you have a water testing kit?

I'm sorry about your little guy - I'll help you as much as I can.

Did the water change perk him up a tiny bit?
