Possibly the most stable tank setup I've had in 20 years!

Was definately Nitrates I understand what you are saying though, it just conincided with the purigen becoming full. I just realised what I was saying doesn't have a full logic behind it as if there is less bacteria there should be less nitrates produced in the first place. Hrmm you've thrown me...

Possibly the most stable tank setup I've had in 20 years!

Basically that is the point as they are absorbed in some capactiy by the purigen the bacterial growth is stunted and when the purigen is full and can not absorb no more the waste products completely overwhelm the bacteria and hence your spkes.

    pleco killed green terror?

It is next to impossible to stop convicts breeding they are like the rabbits of the fish world.

Possibly the most stable tank setup I've had in 20 years!

L202 is a kind of pleco about $150AUD at 3cm. Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate are "Nitrogenous Compounds" as Seachem call them. I find is strange that they say it doesn't absorb A/Ni/Na when you can see it in anyones test results after adding purigen that they dissapear. The op stated that since...

    T connection leaking

I would start over again, just make sure you apply liberally with solvent next time making sure to turn the joints into the right position, I find that doing this disperses the solvent and have never had a leak doing things thins way. It should state on the bottle if the pvc solvent is safe for...

    electric blue jack demsey

Yeah EBJD's are known to just randomly die (my friend breeds them) they are a little girly compared to normal JD's but then again JD's aren't really that agro anyway. My friends EBJD's won't even eat endler guppies.

    pleco killed green terror?

Yeah pairs of yanks don't work out well in a community sort of tank. I'd blame the convicts not the pleco.

How to move Jack dempsey fry into bigger tank?

Best option is to have an empty tank, syphon off water from the tank they are already in to fill the other tank and then syphon the fry into the other tank or into a bucket then put them in the other tank. If you have a set up tank that is different to the tank they are in they will most...

Possibly the most stable tank setup I've had in 20 years!

Purigen is a product that absorbs Nitrogen compounds, ie ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. When the Purigen is full as such and needs replenishing you will end up with a massive Nitrate spike. Happened to my friend and nearly killed all her L202, it is always good to have a second bag of purigen on...

    PLECO HELP for a newbie

blood worm would be perfect, but they could be weined onto a cichlid pellet of some sort once a week if you wanted to save money.

Ammonia, Bald Spots, and Unidentifiable White Stuff! D:

With nitrite levels like those i'm amazed any of the fish are alive at all. I would recommend using a 5 times dose of seachem prime and doing treatments of pimafix and melafix. The fish are obviously suffering from high nitrites and are being overwelmed to bacterical or fungal infections.

    Help my fish is lazy!!

Clown plecos mostly only feed on wood and vegetables, does it have those two things? They need the wood to help them digest wood or they will end up bloated/constipated and die. Being nocturnal they need places to hide in the day and will only come out at night.

    Sorry, another ICH question

One thing I have learnt not sure if it's coincidence or not but a friend of mine keeps blue rams and she used to get ich a lot with them. One day she went out and bought a uv sterilizer and has never come back. For actual treatment I can't help but might be a useful prevention method for the future.

    food for my cichlids

Breeding convicts is a sure fire way for feeder fish, everything I have read about them as feeders says they are healthier then goldfish and give a higher return as well.

    Stocking list for africans?

You do not need to add salt for mbuna, if you have a canister filter you can just add crushed coral to one of the baskets and this with tap water is all you need to attain the right water conditions (ie pH, gH and kH). As for the catfish I do not know, if they have long finage they will be fin...

    nitrates

Unsure if you can get this in america but try find a product called Eco Bio Blocks they will remove nitrates for 12-18months. It's some kind of filter media impregnated with bacteria that consumes nitrates. Yes it does work, I know people that use it in multi tank sumped breeding systems. It's...

    Seachem Stability = Cloudiness?

The urine colour will be tannins leaching from your drift wood (if you have any) as I said before add some seachem purigen or activated carbon to your filter and it will go away. Just make sure to change the carbon ever few weeks

    Numerous saltwater-to-freshwater conversion questions...

Just try bleach or chlorine and rinse with vinegar should be right for cleaning. You will be able to get lower wattage tubes the ballasts just take a maximum light you can always have less powerful lights in there. The 10000k light will grow plants greatly though so maybe get 2 4000k and 2...

    Tank change

I didn't think it would really affect anything, I won't be adding new fish either untill the bacteria grows on the other bio balls in the sump then I will be removing the ones that I added from diy canister (if that makes sense). With there being a complete substrate change in one tank and the...

    Tank change

I am changing from a single 3ft tank to a 2teir 4ft with sump set up. I am using the gravel, internal filter and bioballs from my diy canister from the 3ft for the change. If I just add the gravel into one of the tanks and have completely new substrate in the other tank. Will this cause a mini...

My PH refuses to go down any suggestions?

If you really need to change the pH which it seems like you don't really need to. There is always the option to add peat to your filter this will lower the pH how much you need is trial and error really. It's a thing that you have to do really slowly if you have fish.
