    Plants/Fish and hard water

As I mentioned in the past, I switched over my 125 gal. tank from well water to spring water. My well water is extremely hard and greatly limited my choice of fish let alone growing any type of plant. I want a planted aquarium. Nothing grows in my well water except maybe pond plants and algae...

Very sick Placo, very sick tank

My 12 in. Placo is covered in fungus and has stopped eating. Even the eyes are hazed. (All bottom feeders stopped eating) Let me start from the beginning. Last month my 125 gal. tank was coated in Black Beard fungus. All plants were dead and even my rocks and plastic flow tubes of my...

    Placos and plants

Can a very large Placo and a heavily planted tank work out? I have a 125 gal. tank and hate to get rid of my old friend just for the sake of a make over .

well water and a planted tank

I have well water and it's so hard it can't be measured. I can't grow plants and am very limited on the type of fish I can have, not even guppies. Is spring water a healthy alternative to my poor fish swimming around in water that is a few steps away from cement?

    Costia?

I have a 125 gallon tank with Barbs, Guppies, Tetras, Botias, Glass Cats, and Gouramies. It's the Gouramies that seem to be affected by a skin condition that appears as a large discolored area or areas behind the gills on the back. From what I've read I'm thinking Costia. I will euthanize the 3...

Best filter system for a 125 gallon tank

I have had it with my Marineland Double Tide Pool Bio-Wheel filtration system. After doing my once a week 50% water change, I can't get the system to start again. At the moment it is running on 2 power heads. I can no longer get replacement parts as well. I need an overflow control rod assembly...

    My plants are floating!!

I had a beautiful heavily planted 125 gallon tank that my son set up for me, but he used unrooted plants and my very large Plecostomus is now digging up my plants. I need to get the soil potted-type plants and just sink them into the sand, making it more difficult for him/her to uproot...

    Excel amt with water change

Foster told me that I need Excel measured out to 1 ml to every 10 gallons, or 12.5 ml to my 125 gal. tank. Now, if I do a ~50% water change do I put the Excel amt = to what I replaced or = to my total tank capacity? I'm afraid of overdosing. :thanks:

    Newly planted community tank

My son started my 125 gallon community tank with a substrate of gravel and black sand, then added rock, wood, and many plants. It looks fantastic. I also just bought a book, "Ecology of the Planted Aquarium" by Diana Walstad who says that a gravel/sand bottom is a true setup for failure. She...

    Cichlid to Community

I would like to change my 125 gallon tank from my African Cichlids to a well planted community tank. I have well water which is very hard. Hard water usually means live bearers. My concern is the off spring. I don't want a bunch of fry in my tank. They are very difficult to remove in a well...

    powerheads in planted African tank

I am changing the look of my 125 gallon tank. It needs more than just rock. I want to include lots of plants growing around the rocks. Maybe even some drift wood. My son suggested using power heads to increase circulation to enhance the plant growth. I've only used these in my reef tank. Would...

GH level and Africans - Python

GH levels and Poor Python Can water be too hard for African Cichlids? I did a GH test of the tank and directly out of the faucet. After 32 drops in each, I gave up. The scale only goes up to 16 anyway. I think it's safe to say that my well water is very hard. The Nitrate level is a total...

    Tank in big trouble

I just checked the pH in my 125 gallon African Cichlid tank. I used a test strip with 5 different readings. Nitrate, Nitrite, Hardness, Alkalinity, and pH. I don't understand Alkalinity. I thought that was part of the pH. Anyway, that's 120 - "ideal" for a community tank. My well water is very...

    Confused

 I'm getting mixed messages concerning putting Clown Loaches in my 125 gallon mixed African Cichlid tank. I've had aquariums most of my 62 years. I love Clowns. When I saw on someones fish site that I can put them in a Cichlid tank, I bought 4 and put them in. Then I checked more...

    New Member

Hello All, I'm a new member but an old fish enthusiast. I have had fish in my home for most of my 62 years. I've had everything from a bowl of Guppies to my present 125 gallon African Cichlid tank. I've had fresh, brackish and salt. My favorite is salt (reef), but this was too expensive to...
