I have a Aqueon mini bow1 I was thinking of doing a nano planted shrimp tank with some ghost shrimp maybe as starters. Any suggestions or opposing thoughts?

Well your limited in tank size but I think your shrimp idea with some small low light plants is a good plan. Roll with it and enjoy it.

Do you have other tanks, with stones or DW or plants, the biofilm on the items in a matured tank will be a bonus for the shrimp.

These days Cherry Shrimp are pretty hardy, especially if you get them from a breeder in your area with similar water parameters.

But if you have never really kept a tank before the extra cost of Cherry shrimp varying between .50-2. for regular Cherry shrimp is common, the brighter the colors the more often people charge the higher prices for them.

Bright/dark red ones are often available at big box store Petco and they are 3.99.

So a 10 to 25 cent Ghost shrimp is a much more prudent expenditure if you are a newbie.

The big thing is to make sure you have excellent water parameters, and it is easiest to do the testing with a liquid test kit.

1G is a really small space and poor water quality will kill off the shrimp. VERY light feeding, tiny pieces of quality food. Think of the eye of the shrimp as how much food it would need to eat. That way you should not over feed.

Doing a small pwc 2-3 times per week should be helpful. Small meaning that it would be an amount which would keep your parameters in peak condition well within the safety zone.

An easy way to make this process quicker is to prepare your treated water for the week (or 2) and use a gallon water container for the new (fresh) water. Have a convenient sized plastic cup which fits into the tank, not bumping decor. Then a larger container which will hold your "dirty" pwc water in one dump out.

So, scoop, scoop, scoop small cups of water into the larger dumping out container. Add the room temp water back in.

Dump and rinse the other cups container.

Get a turkey baster - discount and dollar stores have them a great price $1-2.

Use this as needed to suck out uneaten food and poo to your discard container with pwc.

The final though atm, would be to make sure that you do a fishless cycle or use media from a trusted friend or your own tank. Be sure that the tank is stable before adding shrimp. They are delicate to fluctuating parameters.

I don’t have a mature tank to steal biomedia from. I will be doing a fishless cycle from scratch because of this. Any suggestions on substrate?

I'd go with sand.

Do 50% water changes every 3 days if your tank isn't cycled.

That would look cool.

No it doesn't need to be cycled before adding plants. Plants will actually help it a little to cycle.
