I suggest you invest at least in a 3 stage; waterflow --> Mech-->Carbon-->RO. I'm using a MaxWaterFlow system, but I found a used one on local used website. Or maybe you can find something cheaper like this: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=26888 That's a good three stage as I talked previously, you'll preserve the RO part, this is the most expensive part of the thing.

Why do you want to invest in a RO unit for freshwater, do you have tap ammonia/trites/trates or hardness issues ? Shrimps dying from coopers ? If you don't have any issues and your KH/GH is low, then I won't waste money in this, except if you go into the reef/saltwater hobby...
