Adding 2 substrate?

Hi. I want to get khuli loaches but I heard they like sand to burrow in. I have Eco complete gravel but not much in my 40 gallon. Any way of separating the 2 in one tank?

If you put sand on top of gravel in time the sand will settle to the bottom.

You could use a small shallow plastic tray and fill it with sand. Would keep most of it separated IMO.
