The only bad thing I've heard about black sand is that it will fade over time. I have sand in my tanks and I haven't had any problems with it yet. It should be fine. :>
I'd wonder if the fact that black absorbs light, so you don't get any extra reflection like you would with a tan sand. Then again that wouldn't make a difference if you're not planning on coral. Also I learned to steer clear of fine sand. When you have sand sifters the lighter fine sand seems to cloud everything up. I had fine sand in my first tank and had to take out my lawnmower blenny because he'd have the hole tank looking like a dust storm.
