HOB filter, how long should you wait to start rinsing the sponge and ceramic media during water changes?

I usually take apart my filter monthly to clean out the hoses. It seems to work well for me. Just be sure to use tank water to rinse any filter media

After my tank cycled I think I waited a month or two, then I started rinsing the media out in old tank water once a month. I tested the tank for a few days after I did this the first couple of times to makes sure there wasn't a mini-cycle from cleaning the filter (there wasn't, but it never hurts to check).
