I've hear that when it comes to filtration more is better. Is an AC 500 too much for a 40 gal tank?

I would tend to say no, but I like to overfilter.

Can you switch to a darker color font? I can't hardly see the green words in the style I am using - :(

I have an AC 150 on my ten gal

Only thing about an AC is that sometimes the impeller blades and motor get gunked up and stop, so you probably want to clean it when you clean the filter media

I have a A/C 500 on a 46 gal. It's just fine for a non-planted tank. It would be too much for many plants although my Java Fern is doing just fine in that tank.

I would agree with tankgirl but I too tend to over filter.
I have two penguin 330's on my 55gal...LOL

I agree with both...and have them both beat with one 5G with a pair of ACminis on it (200gph or 40x turnover/hour).
