Are bright red gills bad?

Then you need to do a large PWC ASAP. At least 50% then wait an hour and do another one.

Do you have a test kit? You NEED to know the levels of ammonia, nitrite and nitrate.

Also, when was this tank set up?
 
Gee, you still didn't get a test kit huh mrfish?? We told you time after time that your ammonia and nitrite levels were most likely very high. I told you that you needed to do at least a 50% water change every day until you got a test kit. I told you that ammonia and nitrite are toxic for fish. Red gills are a clear sign of ammonia poisoning. Your fish breathe in water. Breathing ammonia in is like us breathing fire.
 
so in answer to your question.... yes bright red gills are bad.
how to fix it.... for you I think daily water changes of at least 50%
