Best fish for smaller freshwater tanks?

I didn't see something like this thread, so I thought maybe it'd be good to start?

In your opinion, let me (and anyone else reading!) know what fish you would consider good for smaller freshwater tanks. (10 gallons or less)

Fish friends for smaller tanks:
Bettas (can be aggressive and territorial)
Guppies (livebearers, love making babies)
Tetras (10 gallon minimum recommended, groups of 6+ recommended)
Dwarf gouramis (10 gallon minimum recommended)
Dwarf puffers (aggressive and bitey)
Scarlet badis
Sparkling and croaking gouramis
Galaxy rasboras
White cloud mountain minnows (cooler tank recommended)
Otocinclus (groups of 3+ more recommended)
Peacock gudgeons (maximum 2 or 3 in less than 10 gallons)

Non-fish friends for smaller tanks:
Small shrimp like red cherries, ghosts
Smaller snails like nerites
Mystery snails (but they will eventually get big)

Anyone's input is appreciated!

I love bettas, of course, and they are my number one choice. But, I have also fallen in love with my scarlet badis. He finally got comfortable and now he zooms around the tank and is very interactive. Sparkling and croaking gouramis are also great, but are more shy than my badis is. I also love my boyfriend's galaxy rasboras. They are so neat to watch in his fully-planted tank.

FishLady, what size do you recommend for the scarlet badis, gouramis, and rasboras? I'm gonna keep the first post edited with people's advice, for easy referencing. :)
