Best way to aquascape an aquarium?

Im thinking of a 2 island look but dont know where the fish would hide? Everytime I try to build caves I end up taking up too much sand space and it starts to look like a wall. I just need some advice or suggestions on what to do and the best way to do it. Thanks.

it is all about how you place the bottom rocks stagger them with gaps in between
than stack more on top

I built 2 islands but they are hollow so the fish can swim through out

than I just used a flat rock across the top of both islands to finish it off
