Camera reccomendations???

Firstly, i was wondering if i should get an SLR camera... could someone tell me the advandages of this?

I was thinking of getting a Nikon coolpix 8700 if i dont get an SLR
and Nikon D70 if i decide i want SLR

Could you guys reccomend any other good cameras in that price range???

If you can afford it, and you realize your investing in a lens system and that the lenses will very likely cost you more than the body...then the dslr is the way to go. They have more features, they are faster, provide better image quality etc...Most will provide you wonderful pictures in fully auto mode, although that would really be a waste of a great camera.
