Changing Filter Media?

I was just wondering how strict people's media change regime is because I feel like im changing media all the time

I don't change my media, I clean the pads, rinse the biological (potscrubbers) with tank water. I do the pads monthly, and the bio every 4-6 months. Been using the same stuff for about a year, no breakdown. I choose not to use chemical because I feel it robs my plants of nutrients.

I don't change mine until its literally falling apart. I wash it in tank water during water changes and simply put back.
