CO2 and sump

Will a sump defeat the purpose of adding CO2 to a tank? I have heard that you don't want any surface movement when using CO2 to reduce the gas exchange.

kinda. first of all not all planted tanks will need co2. some people find a way to seal up their sump to help cut down it escaping.
