Converting to External Filter advice

Hi Guys, a mate at work who has bought his new tank about a month ago has decided to up his filter to one of the fancy Fluval G3's. I have been pondering putting an external filter to my Fluval Roma 90 litre (20 Gallon), be nice to get the filter out of the tank and eventually put in one of the 3D backgrounds. Was just wondering if anyone had any tips of how best to go about converting from internal filtering to externally?

Nothing special when switching filters except to run both at the same time for a couple of weeks to seed the new canister. What type of media is the trays? I stuff all my canisters with Biomax in every tray but alot of people use filter floss in the lower trays to catch debris prior to hitting the media.
